Bibi glanced at the clock one more time and wrinkled her nose in frustration. "Where is Tony for goodness sake?" He had sounded all concerned and agitated when she had spoken to him. He promised he would be with her as fast as possible.

What could be keeping him?  She had dashed to the bathroom as soon as the call ended and got her self ready in 15 minutes. She did a quick mental check - presentable clothes- check!  teeth all brushed and clean - check! decent hair - no check! She almost forgot to remove her sleeping scarf. She yanked it off her head and dashed to the mirror to shake out her braids- now check!

She kept expecting the knock on the door. She chewed her lower lip one more time, a sure sign she was getting worried, and tried dialing Tony's number. It rang out. She contemplated sending an sms, but decided against it. In any case, he never read his text messages on time.

She checked in on the kids, and they were fast asleep. Bless their hearts. If not for them, she would have gone insane.  And bless Tony too. He was everything she had ever wished for in a guy.

She walked back to her room, and her eye caught a picture peeking from one of the book shelves.  It was a picture of herself, Tonye and Tony. The three musketeers, they were called back in the day. Tonye was always the 'bad' guy, and Tony was the cool dude. Shame she fell hard for the bad guy - it would be this same 'badness' that would ruin their marriage.

She thought to herself "Why couldn't he just grow up and stop being reckless? Even if he was experiencing the famous mid life crisis, why didn't he just buy a motor bike like Yinka?

Why did he have to go all seedy and dirty? And then the whole drama with the infection and all. He didn't even have the decency to apologize!"  She shook her head in bewilderment. "At least it will be over soon"

She glanced at the clock again and realized how late it was getting. Tony had still not shown up. Her worry started giving way to concern and fear. She didn't know what to think - "What if something happened to him on the way to the house?" She couldn't bear the thought.

Her mind flashed back again to Tonye who had left the house in a rage. "Could he have gone over to confront Tony?" Most likely not. He would for sure go back to his slutty whores and drink the night away, crawling back into bed in the wee hours of the morning.

She had already planned her response when he came home. She would give him the silent treatment and pretend he didn't exist, at least until the divorce.

She dialed and dialed Tony again. It rang out. Again and again. She replayed the last conversation they had that day. She vaguely remembered him talking about a sales pitch when he dropped her off, but she was so distracted by his kisses, she didn't really pay attention.  She forced herself to remember... What was that he said? Something about not being able to call her because..... "that's it! He invited his office team over to work on the sales pitch. But how long does it take to get rid of them?" She knew the gang was typically no fuss, except Sesan. "Mshew, that one would take forever to leave the house."

Suddenly, the phone rang. It was Tony. "Hey Tony, I have been trying to call you! Where have you been? Where are you?"

"Oh, hi Bibi, this is not Tony. This is Sesan"

Whoa. Surprise. Surprise. "Hey Sesan, been a while, you are with Tony's phone?". She did the subtle question thingy, just letting her voice rise slightly at the end of the sentence.

"Yes He is changing his clothes in the bedroom, we are going out to celebrate!" Sesan was bubbling with excitement.

"Err, celebrate what?"

"Our engagement! Tony just proposed to me! It was so sweet and unexpected. You see, we were in his house earlier today, working on a presentation, and all of a sudden, he asked us to leave cos he had some urgent things to do. Well, as luck would have it, I left my purse and my hanky in the rush, so I came back to pick them up. The door was open, so I let myself in. and you cannot imagine! Tony was sitting down staring into space. As soon as he saw me, he just brought out a ring from his pocket, and asked me to marry him.

I couldn't believe it! I mean, I knew he liked me, but the way he went about it, it was quite a surprise... am so happy, I am still in a bit of shock actually!"

Bibi clutched the phone tighter and tighter until her knuckles started aching. She sat immobile as Sesan droned on and on. At a point, she could swear she stopped breathing. It made no sense. She felt herself leaving her body, floating across the ceiling while she sat down there, barely moving, barely breathing, listening to the chatter from the phone.

A tiny voice kept shouting in her head- This is not happening. This is not true.  You are dreaming. Time to wake up! Wake up now Bibi.

 It was not a dream.

She overheard Tony in the background..... "Sesan, who are you talking to?"

"Oh darling, I am just telling Bibi about the good news of our engagement!"

She heard him swear loudly and in few seconds, he was on the phone. "Bibi, let me explain, you were not meant to hear it this way. Bibi are you there? Please listen to me."

"Et tu, Brute? Or should I say Et tu, Tony??  Seems all men are the same huh? I guess congratulations are in order"

"Bibi, please don't hang up, I chose you, I chose you! Let me explain please!"

"No need to explain Tony. Goodbye. Please don't ever call me again. Ever."

She threw the phone across the bed and wrapped her arms tightly across her chest. She felt so cold inside, like if a hole had just been carved out of her heart. Her eyes however, were surprisingly clear. As if the tears had dried up in her soul. She opened her mouth to scream, but no sounds came.

Just then, the door opened and Tonye walked in. He took one look at her, hunched across the bed, eyes open, unblinking, almost comatose. He spotted the phone on the bed.

Without a word, he scooped her in his arms and hugged her tight.

She kept staring into space. Into nothing. Into nothing.

All they could hear was the clock ticking.

It was going to be a long night.
